The Club was formed in
1970. Originally formed as purely a social side, the Wyvern
drew on players from Saturday sides, which then played other
local Clubs in friendly fixtures on Sunday mornings.
By the late 80's the
'next generation' of players had joined and the Club had a
full season of Sunday Social fixtures right across South and
West Somerset,
even
some against a few Devon sides. Many of those playing were
purely playing for fun and were not Saturday players at all.
The Club ranks swelled as league rugby took hold and many
players were just looking for friendly fun rugby.
The latter part of the
Noughties saw all Somerset sides (2nds and 3rds) go into to
the Somerset Leagues. Some went willingly, some went kicking
and screaming, but go the did. The death knell for the
Wyvern began to toll. In three seasons the Club went from
playing 22 fixtures in a season to 8.
Faced with the Club folding, the decision was taken to
change the whole ethos of the Club and become a Saturday
side, joining Somerset 3 South at the start of the 2009/10
season.
