INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

By way of providing members and prospective members of the Wyvern Club with some information about its organisation and the facilities it has to offer, we hope that the following notes will be useful.

AIMS OF THE CLUB – To provide social, recreational and sporting facilities for members and their families.

SITE – The Club is situated at the top end of Mountfields Road, off South Road, Taunton, and comprises a playing field area of approximately six acres and associated clubhouse facilities.

MEMBERSHIP – membership of the Club is open to serving and retired officers of the following public authorities in the town, their spouses or partners and dependent children:

Somerset County Council
Taunton Deane Borough Council
Somerset Health Authority
Such other public authorities in the area as the Management Committee approve.

In addition the facility exists for a limited number of “associate” memberships. Members are permitted to sign in up to four guests each on any one occasion.

MANAGEMENT OF THE CLUB – The Club’s affairs are managed through an annually-elected Management Committee. The constitution of the Management Committee provides for seven members to be co-opted to serve each year, two of whom are specifically to represent the interests of those members who are not employees of the County Council.

The day-to-day running of the Club’s general affairs is in the hands of a full-time Manager, who lives in a bungalow provided on the Club’s site.

FACILITIES OFFERED BY THE CLUB

Outdoor facilities – Six-acre playing field which provides playing facilities for soccer, rugby, cricket, hockey, volleyball and athletics, and an all-weather surface hard-court area comprising two tennis courts, two netball courts and a five-a-side soccer pitch.

Indoor facilities – These are provided in the clubhouse, opened in December 1973. The accommodation comprises a large social hall and stage area, which also serves as an indoor games area when required; a comfortable, well-appointed lounge bar; a children’s room; a skittle alley; a committee/general purpose room and the usual services. The Club also has facilities for wheel-chair users.

The main hall is ideally and easily adaptable to suit a variety of uses, including stage shows, dances, games, competitions, quizzes and film shows – volume self-controlled piped music is relayed over the internal stereophonic reproduction sound equipment to add substance to the pleasant atmosphere already created in the building. The Clubhouse is open every evening and at lunchtime on Sunday.

There are also two squash courts and an extensive storage area. In addition, good facilities for changing and showering are provided for those partaking in any sports at the Club.

ORGANISED ACTIVITIES – One of the Management Committee’s responsibilities is to organise activities at the Club for the recreation of members. The Committee is divided into sub-committees. The two that concern us here are the Sports and Grounds Sub-Committee and the Social and Entertainment Sub-Committee.

The following are some of the activities that have been organised for members: dances, discotheques, and cabarets.

In addition, there are a large number of self-organised activity groups embracing sporting and social activities. Each of these groups is affiliated to the main Club but is organised as an individual group and is financially self-supporting. In these circumstances, although any member is welcome to join any of the groups, he/she may be required to pay the group’s separate membership subscription.

Finally, it is worth noting that the Club possesses two gaming machines for those who like a gamble, and there are also two pool tables, table soccer and darts.

CATERING FACILITIES – The Club’s Manager is most enthusiastic and helpful, and hot and cold bar snacks are available at very reasonable prices. The Manager is able to undertake catering facilities for conferences, parties, wedding receptions and office socials on request from members.

BOOKING ARRANGEMENTS – Members are able to book facilities at the Club for private functions subject to dates being free from other bookings at the time of the application. Bookings should be arranged through the Manager, who holds a supply of application forms which must be completed, and the instructions on which complied with, in each case.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE – Management Committee members are pleased to help prospective members with any queries at any time and they are always ready to welcome suggestions and ideas from members about the organisation of the Club’s affairs.
